Carnival of Xanthi 2014

The Carnival of Xanthi is back in town and promises to offer to residents and visitors of the lovely city of Xanthi (Thrace, Northern Greece) numerous moments of entertainment from February 14, 2014 to March 2, 2014.

This year’s theme of the Carnival is ‘Carnival Mundial’ on the occasion of the Mundial taking place in Brazil. The festivities include speeches, art exhibitions, concerts, theatrical performances and many folklore events. The carnival’s peak will be the Grand Parade which will take place on the final Sunday of Carnival season on March 2, 2014.

After the Grand Parade the custom of the ‘Burning of the Tzar’ will follow; this is an old custom adapted to the present. The Tzar is a look alike of the Carnival King which is burnt in a big fire by the river Kosynthos situated at the entrance of Xanthi’s old town. The carnival’s closing ceremony will be accompanied by many impressive fireworks.
