Carnival of Athens 2014

The Athenian Carnival invites people of all age to a unique fiesta that will last from February 15, 2014 till March 3, 2014, offering a rich programme of festivities. The festivities begin on February 15, but the official launch date will be on February 20, the traditional ‘Tsiknopempti’ day (named after the fact that barbecued meat is eaten on that Thursday in Greece) , at Varvakeio Square, offering concerts and culinary delights. In the evening the festivities will be transferred to Plaka where concerts and carnival parades will take place. There will be miscellaneous children activities. Amongst them, in the Municipality of Athens on Sunday February, 16 at Technopolis and on Sunday February, 23 outside of the Archaelogical Museum, the children will be able to play, sing, dance and get a face painting.

The Culture, Youth and Sport Organisation of the Municipality of Athens organises this year’s Carnival Festivities in which participate two of its Museums. The Museum of Folklore Art and Tradition “Aggeliki Chatzimichali” in collaboration with the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre of the Academy of Athens, will conduct educational guided tours of the Greek Carnival customs and traditions. The Dodecanese House of “Vasillis and Irini Moskovis” in collaboration with the Cultural Group “Archipelagos” will present to the visitors the carnival traditions of the Dodecanese. Present throughout the town, outdoors and indoors, the visitor can enjoy several Musical Ensembles of the City of Athens Cultural Organisation.

The carnival festivities will wrap up on Clean Monday on the Philopappou hill as the final epicenter.
