Get Active and Get Married on Lefkada

The beautiful and diverse island of Lefkada in the Ionian is the go to Greek destination for the active holiday lover. The varied coastline and mountainous centre offer a wealth of dramatic and stunning locations to indulge your active hobbies whilst enjoying great food, sunshine and hospitality. There are companies based on the island offering yacht flotillas, learn to sail courses, guided mountain biking, open water swimming, walking, yoga, kite surfing, wind surfing, dingy sailing, paragliding and scuba diving to name a few! A lot of the companies offer holidays or sessions that are suitable for families as well as individuals and couples. If it all gets too much, there are always the dreamy blue waters of the West Coast beaches, Porto Katsiki and Egremni to escape to and while away the hours with a good book! The island’s popularity for active holidays came up in a conversation with myself and the owners of guided mountain bike company, Get Active Lefkas in the Spring. We mused about what could active people do when they want a destination wedding so they can still have time to get out and enjoy their passion? The answer, an active wedding and a search proved that Lefkada is the perfect combination of scenery and active holiday options to offer this. This led us to discussing our favourite places on Lefkada and which location we would choose. Would it be the open beach of Kathisma with a dramatic sunset, or the picturesque off shore island of Meganisi, perhaps the back drop of the waterfalls at Rachi? The firm favourite came out as Ag Ilias ‘The White Church’, the highest point on the island, with panoramic 360c views of the island! Lucy at Get Active had some clients who were thrilled with the idea of a unique ceremony and so in the heatwave of early August we packed up the truck and took our Bride and Groom, upwards into the mountains. Leaving the coast at a humid 38c we headed up 1278m to the summit and a deliciously cool 25c! The Groom and Best Man cycled up to the Church on mountain bikes and our beautiful Bride, Felicity, was waiting by the bell tower. A short but sweet ceremony sealed the deal and they celebrated with champagne before posing for what might be some of the best wedding pictures we’ve taken on Lefkada yet! We helped the Bride change into something easier to cycle in and the couple headed down on mountain bikes to the former island capital of Karia for more drinks and delicious dinner in the square. It just proves that weddings and holidays can be exactly what you want them to be and here in Greece you can live your dream moments!
