10 Greece - Inspired Movies

If you are a dedicated cinephile, you probably already know that there are numerous Greece  - inspired films, which have made the country’s beauties known worldwide. If not, here are the ten most popular ones:

1)      Le Grand Bleu (1988)

The film stands out for its unique under water shots. A significant part of the shooting took place in Amorgos and Ios, which resulted in making the less touristic Cycladic Islands known abroad.

2)      The Bourne Identity (2002)

Despite the fact that it is one of the most famous films in this list, few know that the last scene of The Bourne Identity was shot in Mykonos.

3)      Mediterraneo (1991)

Mediterraneo was filmed in Kastelorizo, Dodecanese. The film tells the story of a group of Italian soldiers who, during the Second World War, offered their service on the island, which back then was the eastern border of Italy's Axis.

4)      Bang Bang! (2014)

Although it is not the only Bollywood movie that has been filmed in Greece, Bang Bang! is the most commercial one. The most popular song of the film, named Meherbaan, was shot in Santorini, making the island a particularly preferable destination in the Indian tourist market.

5)      Before Midnight (2013)

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy return to the roles of Jesse and Celine, from their previous movies, and present the third and final part of the film trilogy in Messinia.

6)      Mamma Mia! The Movie (2008)

Mamma Mia! has made the island complex of Sporades a must-visit destination in Greece. It was filmed on Skopelos Island and on the coasts of Pelion.

7)      My Life in Ruins (2009)

This film was shot in Athens, Olympia, Epidaurus and Delphi. It is an American production that was licensed by the Greek Ministry of Culture to film on the Acropolis of Athens.

8 )      James Bond - For Your Eyes Only (1981)

This is the twelfth film of the well-known action-film series. As agent 007 takes over the remnants of a shipwreck in the Ionian Sea, he ends up on the beautiful island of Corfu. In one of the last and most adventurous scenes of the film, the English spy is seen on the mainland suspended from the rocks of Meteora!

9)      Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001)

This particular film is one of the most popular Hollywood productions in Greece, filmed almost entirely, on Kefalonia. It has received excellent reviews for making the most of the blue-green hues of the Ionian Sea in its shots.

10)   Zorba the Greek (1964)

The film, which was filmed entirely on Crete and is a transfer of Nikos Kazantzakis' classic Life and Adventures of Alexis Zorbas to the big screen, was awarded with three Oscars. Some of the sites featured in the film are the city of Chania, the beach of Stavros village (where Zorbas's dance scene was shot) and Akrotiri in Chania.
