In the northwestern part of the country, mountainous Epirus invites you on a winter exploration filled with nature, adventure, dreamy flavors, and traditional architecture. Discover picturesque settlements and stone-built bridges, dense forests, wild mountains, and important ecosystems along an enjoyable yet demanding 239 km road route that begins in Ioannina and ends in Northern Tzoumerka.
On the shores of Lake Pamvotida, Ioannina emerges through the mist, offering a winter spectacle against the backdrop of snow-covered Mount Mitsikeli. Welcome to one of the most beautiful cities in Greece! The day begins with traditional Greek coffee brewed over hot embers, overlooking the lake, and continues with a walk along the lakeside road—the most magical stroll you will take in the city. The earlier you start, the more likely you are to encounter the characteristic mist that usually blankets Lake Pamvotida in winter. Explore the Castle and the Its Kale acropolis, featuring the 18th-century Fethiye Mosque, the tomb of Ali Pasha, and the Silversmithing Museum, where you will learn everything about the history of silversmithing in the Epirus region. The Castle is also home to the Jewish Synagogue, one of the largest and oldest surviving buildings of its kind in Greece. Wander through the picturesque alleys with their well-kept courtyards, which make the Castle feel like a haven untouched by the bustle of the city.
Almost 54 kilometers (a 45-minute drive) separate Ioannina from Metsovo, one of the most vibrant and fascinating mountain communities in Greece. Experience its authentic atmosphere with a walk along the cobblestone streets and the central square, shaded by centuries-old plane trees. Visit the remarkable Metsovo Folklore Museum, housed in the Tositsa Mansion, where a Metsovite manor house of the 17th–19th century is brought back to life with all its household items and furnishings. Discover some of the most important Greek visual artists of the 19th and 20th centuries at the E. Averoff Gallery. And don’t leave Metsovo without tasting the renowned cheeses of the Tositsa Foundation (metsovone, metsovela, retsana, and more). Finally, both at the Katogi Averoff Winery and at the tasting room of the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos winery, it is well worth sampling the wines that have made Metsovo famous around the world.
Winter in the Pindus Mountains is perfect for adventure! With slopes for all levels, seven lifts, and equipment rental available, Anilio Ski Center is an ideal destination for alpine and touring skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding. Snowmobiles and sleds promise endless moments of fun, while if winter sports are not your preference, take a seat on the chairlift for an unforgettable ride above the snow-covered landscape. You can also enjoy the enchanting views of the pristine white Pindus from the welcoming chalet, relaxing with a hot drink beside its expansive glass windows.
Three more unique mountain villages, true gems of Epirus architecture, await you further south on the slopes of the Northern Athamanika Mountains (Tzoumerka). Dedicate a full day—or even more, with an overnight stay—to exploring the villages of Syrrako and Kalarrytes. The stone bridges, the stone houses with slate roofs, the watermills, and the charming cobbled streets will transport you to a dreamlike Greece from another era. From Syrrako, admire the breathtaking view over the Chroussia Gorge.
In Kalarrytes, the birthplace of silversmith Sotirios Voulgaris, founder of the famous Bvlgari brand, experience the most authentic hospitality at the historic café of Napoleon Zaglis, which first opened its doors in 1840. The trail connecting Syrrako and Kalarrytes is the most enjoyable way to explore both villages with an easy one-hour hike. During the winter months, access may be limited, so it’s wise to consult the locals before setting out.
Reach Matsouki (39.566948, 21.163574) for a stop at the impressive Kamili Waterfall, located just below the village square, and enjoy the tranquility of a place that has preserved its authentic character unchanged through time.
The final stop of the route is the village of Pramanta, which can also serve as a base for exploring the southern Tzoumerka region. In the central square, at the foot of the imposing Strogoula peak, you will be greeted by a centuries-old plane tree, before continuing to the Monastery of Agia Paraskevi to enjoy panoramic views. Visit the impressive Anemotrypa Cave with its unique geological formations and underground lakes in shades of white, pink, and gray. In the cave’s final downhill section, you will hear the roar of the river rushing through the depths of the earth. Continue to the magnificent Plaka Bridge, the largest single-arch stone bridge in the Balkans, a prime example of Epirus masonry with a clear span of 39.78 meters! After collapsing in 2015 due to severe weather, it was fully restored in 2020 with an exemplary reconstruction. Walk across it while enjoying views of the emerald waters of the Arachthos River and rest at the small café next to the bridge before beginning your return journey.
