Rigas Fereos Square
With the sea embracing it from the right and left, Chora of Andros enchants at first sight. Mansions with neoclassical elements, white cobblestone streets, bougainvilleas, and the dazzling light of the Aegean create a vivid canvas where art and naval tradition meet island elegance.
Vehicles are not allowed in the historic center of the settlement. Leave your car in the municipal parking lot and start your tour from Rigas Feraios Square. The Town Hall dominates the square, an imposing 19th-century neoclassical building, a witness to the wealth brought by the sea and seamanship to the island in earlier times. Just a stone's throw away, the Kairios Library is a jewel of knowledge and culture not only for Andros but for the entire Cycladic island complex. It is worth visiting its historic premises, which house valuable collections, rare editions, and significant temporary art exhibitions.
From here begins the main pedestrian street of Chora, which gathers all the commercial activity of the settlement, with shops, traditional patisseries, cafes, and restaurants. Enjoy your walk without haste. Apart from beautiful shops, the pedestrian street also features important landmarks: see the impressive building of the Nursing Home and the square of the same name, visit the Byzantine church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, and quench your thirst at the marble Kampanis fountain in Kairi Square, resting in the shade generously offered by the plane trees.
