The Princess of the South
Later, the city played a pivotal role in the Greek War of Independence. The Battle of Navarino in 1827 proved decisive, as allied British, French, and Russian forces decimated the Ottoman-Egyptian fleet, paving the way for the Peloponnese's liberation.
Pylos, dubbed the “Princess of the South”, sprawls amphitheatrically across two hills, its aged stone dwellings adorned with flower-filled courtyards and balconies. Its harbour, sheltered by the island of Sphacteria, is considered one of the Mediterranean's safest anchorages.
Summer evenings find locals and visitors united in the central square, beneath ancient plane trees, amidst an atmosphere both simple and authentic.

Intercity KTEL buses connect Pylos with Athens, Kalamata, and nearby towns. Daily services from Athens take approximately 4.5–5 hours, while buses from Kalamata take about 1.5–2 hours, providing a reliable option for travelers without a car.
