The stone jewel of Lousios
The castle of Karytaina, a symbol of power and dominance, was built in the 13th century and experienced periods of prosperity during the Frankish and Ottoman eras. From its walls, the view extends to the verdant slopes and the riverbanks, offering a breathtaking panorama of the Arcadian landscape. At the entrance to the village, the single-arch stone bridge stands out as one of the most beautiful in the Peloponnese.
The history of Karytaina is closely linked to the Greek Struggle for Independence. Theodoros Kolokotronis operated here, reinforcing the castle and using it as a stronghold. The memory of that era emerges through monuments, narratives, and the sense of freedom one experiences.
Currently, Karýtaina retains its traditional character, evoking vibrant scenes from eras past. Stone-paved streets, old mansions, small squares, and kafenia (traditional coffee houses) create a hamlet that invites exploration. The surrounding nature offers opportunities for hiking, exploring Lousios gorge, and visiting monasteries and historical landmarks.

Intercity KTEL buses connect Karytaina with Tripoli, Athens, and nearby towns. Daily services from Athens take approximately 2.5–3 hours, while buses from Patra require a transfer in Tripoli, making the total journey around 2.5–3 hours.
