A city-symbol within a unique aquatic landscape
The city was the birthplace of one of the most important Greek poets, Kostis Palamas, the writer Miltiadis Malakasis, as well as many important Greek statesmen.
Messolongi enchants visitors with its natural beauty. The city derives its name from the lagoons that surround it. According to one of the most widespread versions of its naming, it comes from the combination of the Italian words mezzo and langhi, meaning “place amidst lakes”.
Its lagoon is the largest in Greece and one of the most important wetlands in Europe. It is home to a multitude of endemic and migratory birds, including rare species such as flamingos and herons, which lend a dreamlike atmosphere to the landscape.
Today, Messolongi is a major fish production centre. The city is famous for its exquisite products, most notably the Messolongi bottarga, one of the few Greek products with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Traditional fishing, fish farming, and the art of angling are integral elements of the residents' lives.
Messolongi is a place where history and nature coexist in a peaceful, almost poetic environment.
