A Panorama of 2,500 years of Greek History
The ‘Pyrgi’ Folklore Department
The tour begins at ‘Pyrgi’ (tower), the founder’s former residence which was created starting with three dilapidated rural dwellings dating back to the early 19th century. Exhibits include rare items of furniture, woven carpets, ceramics, and objects of traditional life, such as millstones, jars, and village troughs. The collection also includes historical prints depicting moments from modern Greece, as well as significant archaeological finds. The gardens surrounding the building are rich in trees and ornamental plants of the Mediterranean flora, enhancing the sense of harmony and the timelessness of the Greek spirit.
Museum of Modern Greek Art
In the early 1970s, Ion Vorres expanded his activities into contemporary creation, believing in the power of Greek art to regenerate after the war. A building designed by architect Michalis Fotiadis houses one of the most important collections of paintings and sculptures in Greece. These works represent the most representative examples of Greek creators working during the second half of the 20th century, unveiling new ideas and artistic starting points.
A Foundation for the Nation
In 1983, Ian Vorres donated his entire personal collection to the Greek nation, establishing the ‘Vorres Museum’ as a cultural, public-benefit foundation. Today, the museum is an international attraction, welcoming thousands of visitors annually, from students and academics to heads of state and ambassadors. It remains a vibrant space where historical memory meets contemporary artistic exploration.
