A volcanic atmosphere by the sea
Korfos beach is the harbour and lowest point of Thirasia. A small bay with deep blue waters and steep rocks, which seem to hold the volcano's breath. Caiques from Ammoudi in Oia will bring you here to experience the island's unsullied peace.
Korfos resembles a setting straight out of a film: a narrow strip of black volcanic stone and pebbles touches the sea, framed by stone-built fishermen's houses, tavernas and wooden jetties. The air smells of iodine and grilled octopus, and footsteps etch paths across the dark-coloured sand.
At Korfos, they say the sea "remembers" the lava. If you look carefully, the stones on the coast still have orange and black hues, as if burning.
From this point begins the stone-paved path of 270 steps up to Manolas, the village that dominates the top of the caldera, gazing across to Santorini. Following it, you will enjoy unique sights: Santorini opposite, the volcano in the centre and the sun reflected in the caldera's waters.
If you prefer something quieter, tour the coasts of Thirasia by boat, stopping at Agios Nikolaos, Riva and the Black Beach: the traces of the volcano's great eruption are visible everywhere. In spring, the small harbour fills with wild broom blossoms and thyme, while the sunset behind Santorini is one of the most atmospheric in the Aegean.
