It is well worth visiting Aitoliko from 15 to 24 August, to experience a unique traditional celebration, which has been listed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece. The panigyri of Agiagathis traditionally begins on 20 August and lasts five days. The period following the feast of the Virgin Mary (15/8) is devoted to preparations for the panigyri. There, historical memory meets living faith in a remarkable celebration honouring the liberation of Aitoliko from Ottoman rule and commemorating the fallen armed fighters (armatoloi) of the Greek Revolution. An integral part of the tradition, the Roma musicians fill the town with vibrant, exhilarating music.
During major celebrations and folk events in Messolonghi, designated viewing areas are usually provided for visitors with disabilities and their companions. Twice a year, in Messolonghi, the panigyri of Ai Symiou is held at the homonymous monastery. The first is on 2 and 3 February, when nature prepares for its rebirth, while the second is held in May/June, during the four-day weekend of the Holy Spirit (from Saturday to Tuesday). Zygies (two musical instruments together), dances, processions and participation of the entire local community compose a multi-day feast that brings together people of all ages.
