Carnival: Folk beliefs and exuberant dancing

The Gaitanaki of Livadia

On the final Saturday of Carnival (usually in late winter or early spring), all roads lead to Livadia and Lambrou Katsoni Square, in front of the Town Hall, where music, songs and the energy of the traditional gaitanaki dances fill the air. Preparations begin days in advance, with masqueraders, floats and theatrical performances setting the scene for the festivities. The celebrations reach their peak with the colourful gaitanaki dances, as primary school pupils enthusiastically weave the maypole’s brightly coloured ribbons in and out.

Night of the Spirits

That same weekend, in Amfissa, you can experience one of Greece’s most distinctive ritual traditions. In the narrow streets of the traditional Charmena quarter, once home to a thriving tanning industry, the legend of Konstantis comes to life. According to the tale, Konstantis became a spirit after his beloved Lenio was struck by lightning.

The two-day festivities begin on Friday evening with music, food and dancing, as well as the “Awakening of Konstantis”. The following day brings the “Night of the Spirits” and a spectacular procession that makes its way through the town before ending at Kechagia Square. Bell-bearers, figures dressed in animal hides and mythical characters accompany the spirit through the streets after dark, creating an evocative spectacle that brings together folk belief and artistic expression.

Galaxidi Flour Wars

On Clean Monday (the first day of the 40-day fasting period leading up to Orthodox Easter), the seaside town of Galaxidi turns into a colourful playground. Put on your Carnival costume – or, like seasoned participants, a white protective coverall and swimming goggles – blacken your face with soot and fill your hands with the flour distributed to everyone by the municipality. Take to the streets, join the crowds and throw yourself into one of the most exhilarating “battles” of your life.

During Galaxidi’s famous flour war, laughter, high spirits, colour and carefree fun take over, as the harbour is transformed into a vibrant setting for celebration.

Patras Carnival

The heart of Greece’s Carnival celebrations lies, of course, on the opposite side of the Gulf of Corinth, in the Peloponnese: in Patras, home to its famous Carnival. The festivities traditionally begin in mid-January and culminate in the grand parade on the final Sunday of Carnival (in late winter or early spring).
