When to go

The region is magical all year round, offering different experiences to visitors depending on the season. The most enchanting period to travel to Amyntaio is during the harvest, from October until early November. The aroma of fresh grapes and their sweet juices fills the air, the vineyards are buzzing with life, while many wineries host special events and happenings for wine lovers.

Northwest of Naoussa, between lakes Vegoritida and Petron, on the plateau defined by the mountains of Vermio, Voras, and Vitsi, lies one of Greece's most up-and-coming wine zones: the PDO Amyntaio zone. The soil and climatic conditions here – with low temperatures, heavy winter snowfall, and frequent north winds in the summer – imbue Macedonia's emblematic variety with a completely different character. PDO Amyntaio wines are produced from 100% Xinomavro and are characterised by a great, refreshing acidity and elegance.

The Kir-Yianni estate
Integrated wine tourism experiences, including visits to vineyards, tours of production spaces, and tastings, are offered by the region's certified open-to-the-public wineries, both small and large. Start at the Kir-Yianni Estate in Giannakochori. Wander through the Xinomavro vineyards on foot or by electric bicycle, enjoy a dreamlike picnic with local delicacies, and pick from a variety of tasting packages. Dimopoulos Winery
In the Xino Nero area, the Dimopoulos Winery, with its long family history in viticulture, offers a tasting of its premium wines at the place of production.

Lake Petron
Between lakes Vegoritida and Petron, which are included in the Natura 2000 network, the Amyntaio plateau is blessed with exceptional natural beauty. It is also home to very important ecosystems and dozens of bird and fish species. Choose from a variety of activities that will bring you into contact with nature, relax, and rejuvenate you: cycling, hiking, birdwatching, canoeing, surfing, and more. There is an asphalt route around small Lake Petron, which will impress you with its ethereal beauty.

Unique wine tourism experiences also await wine lovers at Alpha Estate, with guided tours of the winery, visits to the cellars, and wine tastings against the backdrop of the vineyards.

Lake Vegoritida
Starting from the village of Agios Panteleimonas, it is worth taking a drive around Lake Vegoritida, one of the largest natural lakes in Greece. At times, the 50km-long route moves alongside its shores and at others it offers panoramic views.

Palaios Agios Athanasios
Get as far as Arnissa and then head up to the stone village of Palaios Agios Athanasios and the Voras-Kaimaktsalan Ski Centre.
