The island of sponge divers and climbers
The island's capital and port is Pothia, a colourful, amphitheatrically built hamlet, with an interesting architectural profile. Its narrow streets hide old mansions, imposing captains' houses, and single-room traditional sponge diver houses. At the same time, imposing buildings such as the Prefectural Building and the Town Hall, bear witness to the architectural influences left by the Italian occupation.
Behind Hora, at a safe distance from the sea and pirates, lies Chorio, the island's old capital. Picturesque hamlets complete the mosaic of this authentic, simple, and unadorned island. Vathys, with its fertile valley full of citrus trees, is a touch of green in the barren, rocky landscape. Here, the houses sparsely dot the plain and start to come together towards the head of the closed bay, which forms an impressive fjord.
Come to Kalymnos to climb the towering, imposing rocks, to dive down to a seabed hiding ancient shipwrecks, and to explore enchanting caves, wonderful beaches, and hiking trails. Get to know the sponge divers and their history, eat well, and relax in harmony with nature.
