The Thracian Tempi
Nestled on the natural border between the prefectures of Kavala and Xanthi, the Nestos River carves out one of Europe’s most impressive ecosystems. The Nestos Gorge, also known as the Thracian Tempi, comprises a 2,380-hectare “Aesthetic Forest”, integrated into the Natura 2000 network and protected by the Ramsar Convention.
The Keys to Paradise
Between the villages of Toxotes and Stavroupoli, the river meanders languidly, creating picturesque waterways. The landscape captivates with its steep slopes that plunge into the water and the railway line that disappears into the depths of the rocks. A carved path above the tracks traverses the dense riparian forest, beckoning travellers to explore it.An Adventure in Nature
The area is ideal for alternative tourism:- Hiking: The Galani – Kromniko – Livera – Stavroupoli trail, a section of the E6 path, is considered one of the most beautiful in Greece (duration 7-8 hours).
- Activities: Canoeing and kayaking, horse riding, mountain biking, and watching for rare birds (vultures, herons) or wild horses grazing freely.
- By Train: For a truly relaxing experience, a train journey offers unparalleled views as it passes through dozens of tunnels, hugging the riverbank.
