A bridge between the past and the future
The Gathering of the Sarakatsani is held on the last Sunday of June in areas of outstanding natural beauty, such as the Meadows of Pertouli, at the foot of Mount Koziakas in Trikala, Thessaly. Each year the Gathering has a different central theme.
Visitors to the specially designed venue will have the opportunity to participate in numerous different events depicting the traditional Sarakatsan way of life. These include experiential activities, such as weaving, traditional cooking and representations of everyday activities.
The stand-out of each year’s programme is the music and dance events, with dozens of dance groups dressed in traditional costumes, presenting Sarakatsan dances to the sound of authentic folk music. The Tranos Dance, a circular festival that symbolises collective memory and unity, is particularly moving.
The Gathering of the Sarakatsani is more than just a celebration — it is also a bridge between the past and the future. Every aspect of the event exudes emotion and respect for cultural heritage. Admission is free for the general public, with the opening hours, venues and parallel actions announced in good time by the Panhellenic Sarakatsani Federation (POSS) as well as local cultural associations.
