A Rendezvous with the History of Spetses
During the week of the Armata, culminating on the second Saturday of Septembre, the Old Harbour of Spetses comes alive with concerts, traditional dances, theatrical performances, exhibitions, and events for all ages.
The highlight of the celebrations is the reenactment of the naval battle: the Armata, a replica of the Ottoman flagship built by local craftsmen, is set ablaze at dusk in a spectacular display of fireworks and flares. A live narration of the historical events accompanies the spectacle, transporting you to the pivotal moments of 1822.
Before and after the reenactment, you can stroll through the historic Old Harbour, visit the Church of Panagia Armata—dedicated to the symbolic intervention of the Virgin Mary during the battle—and experience the vibrant atmosphere of a celebration that honours the island’s memory and traditions.
