Along the Beech Forest Trails
The most iconic route begins at the Machaira outpost. This two-hour trail crosses the heart of the mountain range. After a stop at the mountain refuge – a key landmark for hikers – the path descends towards the plateau of Mikri Ada. This route offers a rare opportunity to observe the structure of mountain pastures, where free-roaming horses are often seen grazing. The sound of running water carried by the wind enhances the sense of untamed freedom that defines the landscape. For safety reasons, hiking is strictly recommended during daylight hours only, ideally accompanied by a certified guide where necessary.
Do not limit yourself to admiring the view from below. The Rhodope Mountains invite exploration to truly reveal their secrets. If you enjoy birdwatching, focus on the wooded gorges around Machaira, where the steep cliffs provide ideal conditions for spotting rare birds of prey. For mountain biking enthusiasts, the forest tracks connecting the outpost to the Mikri Ada plateau offer routes of moderate technical difficulty combined with outstanding natural beauty.
