Top three destinations for family holidays in Greece
1. Halkidiki : Located on the Greek mainland, this area fringing the Aegean Sea is often described as one of Greece's hidden gems. With more than 300 miles of coastline to explore and plenty of villages that have been largely unaffected by development, this is the ideal spot to visit if you are hoping to enjoy a taste of authentic Greece. Families are well catered for too, with several kid’s clubs here designed to keep children and parents happy. As well as offering a host of activities to ensure the little ones are occupied while mum and dad get some quality time together, there are plenty of pastimes to try as a group. Depending on the age of your kids, you may want to have a go at some water sports, with windsurfing, kite surfing, scuba diving and water skiing among the options open to you. Meanwhile, if you are keen to soak up some of the history of the country, you will discover numerous archaeological sites within easy reach, including the birthplace of Aristotle, Stageira, and Mount Athos - a Christian monument that has remained untouched for centuries.
2. Kos : If you would prefer to discover one or two of the Greek islands, why not head to Kos? This destination is part of the archipelago and should you be searching for a location where you can really enjoy the great outdoors, this could be perfect. Kos is renowned for its stunning beaches, beautiful parks and historic sites, providing everything you need for. Getting around the island with little ones is also relatively easy and safe, thanks to the extensive network of bicycle-only trails. This means you can rent bikes and explore to your heart's content, all without having to worry about the local traffic. Children are sure to love a visit to Nerantzia Castle, which sits at the edge of the island's port and dates back to medieval times. Meanwhile, the old quarter of Kos Town offers an interesting insight into the history of the region, as well as the chance to visit some sites that were once frequented by Hippocrates - often called the father of medicine.
3. Rhodes : Another Greek island worth exploring as a family is Rhodes and there is certainly lots here to amuse children of all ages. From the historic buildings in Rhodes Town to some of the natural attractions, families are bound to have a delightful time if they choose to base themselves here. Little ones with an interest in nature are sure to want to visit Petaloudes, also known as the Valley of the Butterflies. Between June and September each year, the region is literally covered in the colourful flying insects - a truly wonderful sight to behold. Meanwhile, the Marine Aquarium in Rhodes Town can introduce your kids to some of the local wildlife that lives beneath the waves. If you have your heart set on spending a few days on the beach, you will not be disappointed by what you find on Rhodes. Faliraki and Tsambika Beach are both family-friendly destinations thanks to their calm waters and gently-sloping sands.
