Welcome to Thessaly

According to Greek mythology, Thessaly is the land of the Centaurs; the birthplace of the hero of the Trojan war, Achilles; the father of Medicine, Asklipios; and the area where the dispute between the Olympian gods, known as Titanomachia, took place.

Either you visit the mountain of the ancient Greek gods, Mt. Olympus; the large cities of Larisa, Volos, Trikala and Karditsa or the northern Sporades Islands, Thessaly will capture your attention!

Get a tour around the National Marine Park on Alonissos Island, the biggest one in Europe. Head to the twentynine Natura 2000 protected areas. Visit the mesmerising valley of Tempi, the rivers, the caves, the artificial lake Plastira as well as some jaw-dropping beaches (received 19 blue flags in 2018).

Express your devotion at one of the twentyfour monasteries at Meteora (UNESCO Cultural Heritage Monument) also referred to as the "columns of the sky". Discover Mount Pelion, where the Centaurs and the ancient Gods once lived. Explore ancient theatres (e.g Larisa, Demetrias, Phthiotidai Thebes, Ferai), numerous settlements (e.g. Tempi, Metaxochori, Ampelakia, Ellinopyrgos), wonderful stone built bridges (e.g. Pyli, Palaiokarya, Katafylli, Elassona) and the Yeni Mosque in Larisa.

Discover traditional dances of Dionysian heritage (e.g. Bourani in Tyrnavos, carnival’s Bouloukia in Larisa) and cattle breeding (listed in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage). Enjoy Greek music in festivals and tavernas, where ancient rituals, Byzantine music and rebetiko songs (rebetiko were inscribed in 2017 on the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity) come together to create a feast you’ll remember.
Visit archaeological, folk art and thematic museums such as the Volos’ Railway Museum, Volos’ Rooftile and Brickworks Museum, Trikala’s Tsitsanis Museum and Larisa’s Museum of National Resistance. Make a stop by buildings with a cultural, educational and entertaining character such as the Mill of Pappas in Larisa. Feel the festivals’ vibes (e.g. Pineios Festival in Larisa, the Musical Village in Agios Lavrentios, the Diamantis Paleologos Dance Festival in Skopelos) or head towards famous landscapes and seascapes seen in the Mamma Mia film (Skiathos, Skopelos, Pelion).

Savour unique wines (Appellation of Origin of Superior Quality) such as Rapsani, Anchialos and Black Mesenikola. Taste the area’s remarkable produce (e.g. firiki miniature apples from Pelion, Zagoras’ apples), its protected designation of origin products and take a “sip” of tsipouro (e.g. Tyrnavo) in the renowned tsipouradika of Volos. Take a bite out of the delicious halva from Farsala, the flavourful handmade spoon sweets, the scrumptious pies and the rustic spetsofai from Pelion (a spicy meze made with feta, sausages, peppers and tomato sauce).

Explore the plains of Thessaly, gaze down the view from the tall mountains of the Gods or enjoy serene moments by the shores of the Aegean sea. Every single season in Thessaly is charming and locals will welcome you to their land, which is rich in culture and has an invigorating natural environment.

If you love sports then Thessaly can surely feed your appetite with its numerous outdoor activities. Enjoy rafting and kayaking on Pineios River; pedalo or mountain biking on or around Lake Plastira; horse riding in Pertouli; mountaineering in Athamania, Drosochori and Kalogirous; climbing in Neraidochori and Pertouli; archery in Neochori; skiing on Mt. Olympus, Pertouli, Pelion and Agrafa; water sports such as swimming, jet skiing and diving at the Sporades Islands and the city of Volos.
