From Crete to the Danube
The Museum of Byzantine Culture and the Belgrade City Museum present the exhibition "From Crete to the Danube. Images from the Sekoulic Collection, Belgrade City Museum" from 15 December 2022 to 14 June 2023.
The exhibition presents, for the first-time outside Serbia, selected images from the famous collection of the bequest of the Milan and Pava Sekulic couple at the Belgrade City Museum, dating from the 15th to the 19th century, which are works by both named and anonymous painters, representative of the trends in post-Byzantine painting in the wider Balkan area, "from Crete to the Danube".
The exhibition also aims to highlight the common historical, religious, and cultural ties between the two countries, Greece, and Serbia, through works of religious piety, ambassadors of the common cultural heritage in the wider Balkan area, while highlighting the communication and dialogue between East and West through common artistic and commercial routes and the effort to preserve the Orthodox faith in the Ottoman-ruled territory.
At the end of the exhibition, the visitor has the opportunity to tour the space where the Collection is currently exhibited, in the apartment of the Sekulic couple in Belgrade, through virtual reality glasses.
