Churches - Prefecture of Evros

The Prefecture of Evros has remarkable places of pilgrimage, the most important one being the church of Panaghia Kosmosoteira monastery located at Feres. The basilica with dome was built during the 12th century, during the reign of Komninos dynasty. The sacred icon of Panaghia Kosmosoteira protecting all Thracians, wherever they are, is kept in that church. Further to the north, heading to Soufli and near Kornofolia village you will find the female convent dedicated to the same saint, which is the glebe of Ivira Monastery of Mount Athos. To the NW of Alexandroupoli, the visitors of Aghioi Theodoroi cave will have the possibility to admire Byzantine frescos dating back to 11th and 12th centuries. Finally, the Ecclesiastical Museum of the Holy Diocese of Alexandroupoli and Samothrace, which is housed in the building of Leontarideios Town School for boys, in Mitropoleos square, remarkable icons, relics, vestments, historical documents and sacred utensils dating back to the Post-Byzantine period are being exhibited.
