Kimisi tis Theotokou (the Assumption of the Virgin Mary) Giromeriou Holy Monastery

It was built in the beginning of 14th century (1310-1320) by Osios Nilos of Erichioti and was one of the most important monastery centers in Epirus. He donated money to the foundation of The Patriarchic Exarchate and Bishopric that includes 12 rural villages and Filiates city. It operated as Krifo Scholio (illegal underground schools for teaching the Greek language and Christian doctrines during the time of Ottoman rule) and Hieratic School. Its catholic is a cross - vaulted church with four columns and dome built in 14th century and renovated in 16th century (1568). It is decorated with exceptional Byzantine frescos of 16th century and more folklore frescos of 17th century. The chancel was constructed in 1824. Many heirlooms are still preserved. You can visit the monastery everyday from sunrise until sunset. It is located 8km away from Filiates, 23km away from Igoumenitsa and approximately 100km from Ioannina if you go through the national road or 82km if you go through Keramitsa.
