Romantic strolls in Rethymno

In romantic Rethymno, love is in the air!

Explore one of the best preserved medieval cities in Greece, and search for your fairy-tale romance in Rethymno. Venetian fortification works mingle harmonically with orthodox and catholic churches, mosques, majestic mansions of Venetian architecture, arches and cobbled paths which create a magical atmosphere, reminiscence of the city’s turbulent –yet glorious– past.

Rethymno

Capture Rethymno’s lost moments in time by following one of the many scenic routes around the picturesque city centre. Start from Arkadíou Street, where you can follow a unique cultural route crossing Rethymno's historical centre from east to west. Admire unique monuments like the Mosque of Kara Mousha Pasha, the Pattakoú Hani and Drandáki House, both representative works of Venetian architecture. Upon entering Tsouderón Street you will find yourself on the western side of the city.

On your way to the temple of St. Francesco and the Turkish School don’t forget to take pictures of a beautiful doorframe on 12 Tsouderon Street. The square of the 1st primary school is surrounded by monuments providing a pleasant environment for you to take a short break. Walk towards Vernádos Street, a narrow street where important monuments stand, like the Mosque of Gazi Housein and the Historical and Folklore Museum. At the corner of N. Fokas and P. Koroneou streets, in a romantic alley, the Holy Temple of Mary Magdalene (or the temple of the Lady of the Angels) is located.

Pay a visit to the Venetian Fortress, the renowned “Fortezza” that stands imposingly on the hill of Paleókastro overlooking the Cretan sea, as well as the impressive cityscape. Here you can admire beautifully preserved buildings, such as the armoury with its four arched openings, Erofyli theatre, the ruins of the Episcope Palace, the Mosque of Sultan Ibrahim, and the Holy Temple of St. Theodore of Trihinas. Continue to explore Rethymno until you reach the old Venetian Harbour. Enjoy a relaxing stroll in the shadow of the Fortezza, and have a shot of an ice-cold tsikoudiá in one of the fancy cafés.

Are you in love? Set out on a romantic trip to Rethymno with your soulmate. Did you know that Rethymno is a popular choice amongst couples who are planning to get married? The city’s dreamy atmosphere, its awe-inspiring medieval churches, and its outstanding wedding venues create the perfect setting for your wedding ceremony. For the honeymoon of your dreams, choose a destination which offers you a unique blend of crystal clear seas, rich cultural heritage, traditional Cretan specialties, breathtaking sunsets, and romantic strolls around medieval monuments. Several venues also provide wedding facilities to host both your civil ceremony and reception.

Don’t forget to come back to Rethymno during summertime to attend two unique fascinating events: the famous Renaissance festival invites you to become protagonists, co-creators and co-travellers in an enchanting trip through time where music and theatrical expression prevail; and the colourful wine festival that welcomes wine producers, wine aficionados and culinary enthusiasts to a pan Cretan event of culture, gastronomy, and wine tasting.
