This area was discovered during the First World War. The XVIIII (18th ) Inspectorate of Prehistoric and Classic Antiquity began excavating the city of Makri in Evros prefecture in 1988 and these excavations continue up to now. A Neolithic settlement, which is one of the most important in Balkans, was discovered and it made obvious that the ancient settlement was not the city of Zoni but a commercial station.
