Aghios Georgios church

The post Byzantine Aghios Georgios church, built in 1830 probably on the ruins of an older one is still preserved on Agios Georgios hill. It is a three-aisled basilica with wooden roof and of large dimensions. The internal area still preserves its initial decoration. Its wood carved chancel is painted and some of its icons are works of painters from Kolakia. Remarkable are also the painted roofs which date back to 1879. On these, the geometric shapes formed by slim traverses are decorated with plant and flower motives. The morphological elements, as well as the decoration of Aghios Georgios church are representative examples of Macedonian church architecture and 19th century art.
