On foot - Evros Prefecture

Near the center of the Prefecture of Evros, 14 km SE of Soufli and 66km away from Alexandroupolis you will find the Dadia Forest covering the southeastern hilly ends of the massif of Rodopi. The region has been under protection since 1980 and includes two high protection zones extending over 72,900 km2. In the forest complex, the landscape is highly diversified with a spectacular natural relief. The smooth hills are furrowed by tens of ravines and streamlets, the mature pine and oak tree forests are divided by small glades and alternated with fields, meadows and crops, while vertical slopes and rocks emerge here and in the scenery. The local forests comprise of age-long black and rough pine trees , while in the meadows there are lots of wild flowers such as iris, anemones, orchids and peonies. The clumps of trees provide shelter to more than 45 mammal species (wolves, jackals, deers, squirrels, bats, etc). The local reptilian fauna, which is the major source of food for the predatory birds of the region, includes in total 40 different species (snakes, frogs, turtles, lizards, etc). Near the forest is the Dadia Ecotourism Center (tel. 25540 32263), including a hotel, a refreshment bar and an Information Center (tel. 25540 32209).
