The route linking Xanthi to Sminthi and Echinos will lead you to the traditional mountain settlement where typical forest ecosystems of central Rodopi are found. The route Ianthi-Dasochori-Radiostathmos will lead you through rough rural roads to the riverside forest of the Nestos Delta. This is the renowned Great Forest (Megalo Dasos, Kotza Orman) situated at the estuary of the Thracian sea, which used to provide shelter to the wildlife. Nowadays, there is only one part of it left (10,000 km2), but it is enough for the visitor to confirm the grandeur of the old forest.
