Sightseeing Anafi

A walk around the island will give you the chance to visit from close its main sights. Do not forget to visit:

  •  The Ancient City ruins located on top of Kastelli hill and flourished during the Roman period: many Roman tomb sculptures, marble statues and busts were found there. This city was abandoned by its inhabitants the first post Christian Times. On the foot of the hill you can visit Panagia sto Dokari (a Roman marble sarcophagus, decorated with bas-relief depictions is still preserved next to the chapel) and Aghios Mamantos chapels. Right next to it, close to Iera Odos (or Sacred Road) that led from the ancient city to Apollo’s temple, you can still see a Roman tomb complex.
  •  Ancient City's port ruins located in Katelimatsa (Katalimatsa) bay, south of Kastelli hill where you can see architectural parts and ruins of a cemetery.
  •  Zoodochos Pigi Monastery (Kato Panagia). The Monastery’s catholic has a remarkable templon and icons dating back to the 19th century. In the Monastery’s yard and in the surrounding areas there are parts and ruins of Aiglitis or Anafeos Apollo’s sanctuary.
  •  Aiglitis or Anafeos Apollo’s ruins located on the foot of Kalamos hill on the eastern side of the island. Some of the temple’s ancient construction materials were used to build Zoodochos Pigi (Kato Panagia) monastery.
  •  Drakontospilo (or Dragon Cave) located east of Zoodochos Pigi monastery.
  •  Panagia Kalamiotissa Monastery (Ano Panagia). It is located on the top of Kalamos hill at an altitude of 480m (1 hour and 30 minutes walk through an imposing mountain landscape). There is an 18th century templon in its catholic and outside the Monastery are ruins of a fortress dating back to the medieval period.
  •  Kleisidi coastal settlement located 2.5 km SE of Chora.
  •  Aghios Nikolas (port of the island) and the scenic pathway that connects the settlement with Chora.
  •  Christos (or Jesus) chapel located 4.5 km N and Faneromeni chapel in the north side of the island.
  •  Aghios Antonios Byzantine church with the built-in ancient parts and its amazing 13th century frescos.
