The Pinios Delta is a wetland popular for its biodiversity. It has reeds, plane trees, elms, willows, gorse and accommodates at least 225 bird species many of which are rare or endangered (such as cormorants, egrets and flamingos). The area is protected by Ramsar Convention and has been included in the catalogue of suggested areas for incorporation into the European Network of protected areas Natura 2000. It is a sanctuary for many species and during the reproduction period fishery is forbidden.
