Nestos river is one of the most important rivers in Greece. Its springs are located in Rila mountain in south Bulgaria between Aemos and Rodopi mountain chains. Its overall length is 243 km. 140km of the river is in Greek territory.
The climate conditions, the geological relief of the area and water created the appropriate conditions for the development of different kinds of biotopes hosting more than 150 animal species. The different biotopes host numerous flora and fauna species which you cannot find anywhere in Europe neither in quantity nor in ground extend. Some or the most well known habitants of the area are bears, wolves, wild goats, deer, jackals, wild hogs, foxes, wild cats, wild chicken, harrier eagle, trout etc. In the area you can also see different kinds of flora such as red spruce, birch, pine trees, isabelline wheatear, Macedonian pine tree, bushes like bilberry, blackberry, raspberry and plants suck as orchids and the famous Rodopi lily.
Nestos separates the mountains of south part of Rodopi mountain chain creating the well known “Stena” (narrows). Due to its diversity (steep slopes with high hypsometrical difference, caves, geological formation), this area hosts many different flora and fauna species. Plane trees, elm trees, wild arbutus and plants like anemone, wild carnation etc grow in the area. The caves and hollows offer shelter not only to bats but to many other different bird species such as golden eagle, swifts and wild dove.
