Oak tree forest of Almiros Magnesia

Lowland mixed forest of oak located adjacent to Almyros Magnesias. The wider area is composed of a coastal wetland lying between the communities of Platanos and Sourpi. In particular, the area has a residual lowland forest of oak extending over 1000 hectares and a marshy area occupying 280 hectares. The oak forest has three species of oak: Quercus macrolepis, Q. pubescens και Q. penduculiflora. A small part of the forest is used for recreational purposes. The marshy area is mainly covered by reeds (Phragmites australis) and tamarisks (Tamarix sp.). It periodically receives a supply of freshwater from a nearby spring and a stream. The sea water entering the marsh renders the water brackish, almost saline. A part of the area supports crops, orchards, and degraded wetland vegetation that provides food for grazing animals.

The importance of the area rests on several important features. The local marsh is one of the few wetlands of eastern mainland Greece while in Kouris there is a rare lowland oak forest (aesthetic forest). The area is particularly valued as a destination for migratory birds, such as the mute swan, spoonbill, glossy ibis and other species of heron.

Area: 500 hectares
