Flora - Corfu

Corfu, Paxi and Diapontia islands have the richest flora of all Mediterranean islands and constitute a true paradise of natural wealth. Their natural environment includes 6.000 rare species of wild flowers, 55 species of wild orchid and several species of aromatic and pharmaceutical plants.

The richness and variety of flora and fauna are due to the moisture and warm climate, the frequent rainfalls, the geological conditions and the geographical position of Corfu, thanks to which it gathers many plants from Europe and Africa.

During spring the islands look like immense gardens full of flowers. This time of the year is ideal for walks on Corfu’s rich pathway network.

In the middle of February the first orchid Barlia Robertiana blossoms and in the beginning of spring the area is full of Anthemia xhamomila (pharmaceutical chamomile). During autumn we see wild cyclamens, Viola Odorata violets, Narcissus tazetta harebells, Iris Unuicularis water flags, Sternbergia lutea lilies and Crocus Bowles saffrons, Crocus Pickwick, Crocus longiflorus etc.

From the sandy coasts with the lilies Pancratium maritimum up to the cracks in the rocks on the steep slopes of Pantokratoras, Corfu offers to the nature and wild flower lovers a great variety of beautiful and rare plants which they can not find on any other Mediterranean island.
