Laggavitsa narrows

Laggavitsa is affluent of Kalamas river and wells out of Mourgkana mountain. Its springs are full of water even during summer and were named “mana tou nerou" (“mother of water") by the locals.

Close to the river there are many small villages which still preserve their traditional character. Few are the lucky people who visit the area which is probably the most unknown part of Epirus. Laggavitsa gorge combines natural beauty with human activities.

On its “walls” millruns have been curved which lead the water miles away. Stone bridges which are nowadays demolished and their ruins are in the water and one that still stands there, old pathways, mills and cultivation bermes accompany the hiker. On the right riverbank you can still see a type of bridge that bears a millrun and was built for transferring water.

Start your route from the bridge that is located below Charavgi. The route to Leptokaria lasts approximately three hours and is rather easy. On your way you will see ruined bridges Likos and Brania.

It is worth to visit the abandoned Aghia Marina monastery. It is located in an ideal position with great view of the river. The foundations of a big bridge, which once connected the riverbanks, are still preserved close to it.

Stay in one of the rooms to let. You can eat in Charavgi (Likos) and (mainly) in Leptokaria.
