Built on a lush green slope of Tymphristos at an altitude of 960 m, the capital of Evrytania is a small beautiful town with 6,592 inhabitants. It experienced financial and cultural prosperity during the Turkish occupation, while it played a significant role in the 1821 Revolution. The town suffered serious damage during World War II as well as during the Greek Civil War (1946-1949). However, its reconstruction progressed rapidly and during the last decades it has developed a small industrial zone and significant tourism infrastructure.
