According to mythology, it is considered the most ancient city of the world. Built at the center of the fertile Argolic plain, along with Thebes, it was the most powerful city of Ancient Greece. It has significant archaeological monuments and a great Archaeological Museum. It is located 12 km northwest from Nafplion.


  • The ancient town, where an imposing theatre of the Hellenistic Period is saved, with a capacity of 20,000 seats, the Roman Music Theatre, the remains of the temple of Venus and the ancient agora.
  • The Archaeological Museum, in the main square, which houses finds from the excavations in ancient Agora, in the theatre, in Mycenae and Tiryntha.
  • Neoclassical houses, such as the building of the Town Hall and the Constantopoulou Mansion, designed by Ziller.
  • The barracks of Kappodistria (1829).
  • The Church of Agios Petros, patron saint of the town, in the main square.
  • The Municipal Market, a neoclassical building in Stratonon square (1889).
  • The library “Danaos”, with the rich historical files.
  • The Mycaenian citadel “Larissa’, where, apart from the remains of ancient temples, the remnants of an imposing medieval castle are saved till today.
  • Hellinikon, 3 km from Kefalari. Here lie the remains of an ancient fortress, which has the shape of a pyramid and is known as the Pyramid of Hellinikon.
  • Kefalari, which is located 5 km. southwest of the city, in a verdant area, with the “Historic Spilia”, which were the shelters of the revolutionary heroes of 1821.
  • The remains of the Mycaenian citadel of Midea (12 km. to the East).


  • Festival of Argos, with theatrical performances, dancing performances and painting exhibitions.
  • Feast of Agios Petros, on 3 May.
  • A commercial fair, in the Friday of Easter and on the celebration date of Zoodochos Pigi.
