Shopping around Athens

Athens: A marketplace easily accessible and strategically located than any other in Europe!

Athens is a city full of nice surprises for those who like shopping. On its narrow or wide labyrinthine streets you can find more than 2.500 shops selling different kind of products, from local herbs, jewelery, gifts to urban streetwear. At the same time many of its streets have been turned into pedestrian areas it is a very quiet place with many coffee houses, small bars and modern restaurants.

The golden and silver jewels are of significant interest as Greece is famous for the Greek jewelry design. The numerous jewelry shops, located mainly in Syntagma and Kolonaki areas, have a wide collection of ancient Greek jewel replicas as well as traditional and modern pieces. Most of these jewels are handmade by local jewelers. In many Athenian shops you can also find filigree made of silver and turquoise, which are mainly made in Ioannina of Epirus and have traditional motifs of unique beauty.

We suggest you to visit the Ilias Lalaounis Museum of Jewelry, which includes more than 3.000 jewel designs. Its 45 collections present Greek jewelry history, which was influenced by the art and architecture of eleven different civilizations, by the nature, technology and biology.

It is also worth to mention the famous furs of Kastoria, a product of an art that was perfected as centuries passed. In Syntagma area there are many fur merchants, who offer a variety of overcoats, jackets and fur hats, in classic or modern designs.

In good markets you will find souvenirs, handmade objects and bronze vases. Copper utensils, clay items and ceramics are some of the objects that people of Athens are eminent since Ancient times. The ideal place to find unique pieces of Greek ceramic and pottery art is Maroussi, where there are many shops that designer-potters sell their handmade works.

The woolen and cotton pullovers of excellent quality and unique design as well as the leather clothing and shoes are some of the things also worth buying. Ermou Str. and Kolonaki Square are the places to find such things.
Finally, you can find a variety of antiques sold in different shops of Kolonaki, Syntagma and Monastiraki areas (furniture, wooden hand painted trunks, miniatures, small decorations etc).

EOMMEX has established many workshops around the country, where they teach the art of traditional carpet-making. You will be amazed with the wonderful designs, the bright colors and the quality of the materials used for EOMMEX carpets.
