Nightlife in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is a city with vivacious nightlife, one that is so varied and colourful that few other Greek cities are able to offer tempting alternatives. Locals are good-humoured people and they love going out at night. The city’s thousands of students form a buzzing community that has blended well with the locals. You’ll find clubs and bars with a cosmopolitan flair about them; rebetadika (restaurants where live rebetiko music is played); and lively parties hosted by the student community where everyone’s invited: these are some of the choices you have for a great night out in Thessaloniki.

Here are a few tips for how to best savour the city nightlife:

-
Enjoy your drink in a bar in waterfront Nikis Avenue; this is a great location to drink in the lovely view towards Thermaikos Gulf as well, just choose one of the numerous locals’ hangouts lining the avenue.
- The central city streets (namely Tsimiski, Mitropoleos, Pavlou Mela, Proxenou Koromila, Egnatia, Svolou and Agias Sofias pedestrian street) are flanked with bars and cafés with a cosmopolitan ambiance or with a relaxed cozy atmosphere; pick the one(s) that best suit(s) your mood.
- Syngrou & Valaoritou Streets are the city hotspot for the young. Go bar-hopping there and enjoy the variety of music genres both Greek and foreign, as they can cater to all tastes.
- Palia Sfageia is an area just off the city centre, where you can find a variety of clubs and the well-known bouzoukia (playing live Greek popular music). In the summer, head for the airport area where all the above clubs welcome their customers for the season.
- Ladadika is located in the old marketplace area of the harbour, and it’s famous for its eateries, bars, bistros, pubs, and restaurants. Stroll along Katouni pedestrian area and enjoy Thessaloniki by night.
- Kastra is the place to be for those of you with a romantic soul. This is the uphill area of the city, offering great views of Thessaloniki; it’s perfect for having your morning coffee or for enjoying your ouzo with mezedes (tasty titbits) in the evening in one of the traditional tavernas in Eptapyrgio (located at the highest point of Ano Poli area).
- Nea Paralia / Krini is an area offering beautiful views of the seafront and Thermaikos Gulf. Visit Nea paralia Martiou (close to the Thessaloniki Concert Hall) and Krini, a beach in Kalamaria district. Fresh fish and seafood, stylish bars with an unimpeded view of the blue sea is what you get if you choose this part of the city. Tempted?
