Greek Seas at the Benaki Museum

Voyage to insular Greece through the exhibition Greek Seas: A photographic journey in time held at the Benaki Museum (Peiraios Street Annexe) until January 5, 2014.

Through the centuries, Greece has had an unbreakable connection with the sea – it is present in the history of the country and the life of its inhabitants; it has never failed to inspire artists and poets. Following the invention of photography in the mid-19th century and to this date, countless photographic images depicting Greek seascapes have been added to the painted representations of the same topic.

The exhibition showcases approximately 350 photographs divided into 5 timelines: the second half of the 19th century; the first decades of the 20th century; the Interwar Years; post World War II; the period after the fall of the junta to the present day.

The photographs were selected by Fanny Konstantinou and Aliki Tsirgialou as well as Kostis Antoniadis who combed through archives and private collections in Greece and abroad.

The exhibition offers visitors a clear picture of the relationship people had with the sea; the way of life in coastal and island communities; the development of sea-going vessels as well as sailing around the Greek islands, from the times of the first tourists until the recent phenomenon of mass tourism.

The exhibition is one of the events running during The Annual International Conference for Photography Curators, titled Oracle, and it is part of the Athens Photo Festival 2013.
