Kastellorizo

It is situated in the most east part of Greece, just a breath away from the Turkish coasts  (72 nm south of Rhodes). The principal settlement is a charming ensemble of colorful houses of exceptional architecture, impressive churches and picturesque alleys.

Kastellorizo has an ancient history and a great naval tradition. The island was inhabited during the early Neolithic age. Its ancient naming originates from first inhabitant, Megisteas. At the end of 19th century the island reached its growth peak and was counting almost 13,000 inhabitants in the beginning of 1900. Later on, many inhabitants immigrated to Australia and Egypt, while many others took a refuge at Palestine, after the Italian and German bombarding. The Lilliputian island (extending over a surface of just 9 km2 and with a coastline of just 19 km) was officially united with Greece in 1948. It counts 500 inhabitants.  It can be reached by ferry from Piraeus and Rhodes and by airplane from Rhodes airport.
