An excellent nutritious shield for your body
Vegetables and fruits are found abundantly in the Mediterranean diet and are the basic ingredients for building a healthy physique. Their consumption twice daily is suggested by health professionals in order to strengthen the digestive and skeletal system, forming a shield against diseases. Vegetables contain water, little to no fat, antioxidants and are low in calories. Moreover, they provide the body with necessary vitamins, help maintain weight and keep hair and skin in excellent condition.
A garden that has it all
April is basically the month that summer vegetables are planted. Feel the joy of gardening and cultivating your own lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, zucchinis, carrots, onions, garlic, peas, celery, parsley or artichokes always depending on what you prefer and how much space you may have. It truly is a wonderful feeling to grow fresh and organic vegetables in your own backyard.
If you happen to have a house with a backyard then keep a corner for cultivating your own vegetables. A 3x3 metres space is more than enough for you to commence a journey as a gardener. In order to make your own fresh batch of vegetables lots of space is not really needed. This is why Greeks who happen to live in apartment buildings usually grow their own produce in pots and flower beds on their verandas
So start your gardening by following simple instructions and in no time at all you’ll be tasting your own vegetables.
- Choose a location where the sun shines for more than six hours.
- Work the soil and add manure or other organic matter such as compost.
- Make sure water is drained swiftly otherwise you may need to add some perlite to improve your soil’s aeration and drainage.
- Choose vegetable seeds or plants grown in nurseries you’d wish to cultivate.
- Plant them in rows, keeping a good distance between them, as they will need space to fully grow.
That is all you need to do… now it is nature’s turn to do its own work. Well, you will actually need to water the plants, most of them daily and preferably in the afternoon. Besides that, it is advisable to work the soil (once or twice) and clear garden weeds.
From garden to plate
Having waited patiently for the harvest time to arrive it is now time to taste the fruits of your labour. With a basket in hand, start gathering fresh deep red tomatoes and cucumbers and make your own Greek salad, harvest zucchinis, eggplants, carrots and onions for a delicious briam, gather a variety and prepare a delicious stuffed vegetable pot or cook a delicious rizoto, pick up some artichokes, peas, green beans and cook a flavourful stew, and finally if you feel like it pick up some lettuce and make an aromatic frikase.
Nevertheless, if you produce more vegetables than you can consume, you can easily make your own pickles or you even freeze some of them for later use.
