Zagori Mountain Running 2018 in Epirus

The eighth edition of Zagori Mountain Running, one of the leading Greek ultra-trail events, will be taking place once again this July giving outdoors and adventure enthusiasts the chance to compete in the challenging trails of the mountainous Zagoria region in Epirus, north-western Greece.

Zagori Mountain Running is an annual mountain running race being held every July at Zagori – an area of exquisite natural beauty that boasts a complex of 46 picturesque stone built villages known as Zagorohoria. As part of this year’s event, which runs on 20-22 July 2018, a series of 80km, 44km, 21km and 10km races will take place as an opportunity for nature lovers and athletes to try out their strength in the beautiful landscapes of Mt Tymfi, Vikos Gorge and the Zagoria villages. Parallel events include a 1km Kids Race, called Zagoraki, aimed at introducing children to the values of sports and outdoor activities.

Nestled among the northern Pindus mountain range amidst lush forests, cascading rivers, rugged cliffs and steep valleys, the Zagoria villages are connected by scenic trails and arched stone bridges that date back to the 18th-century. The area, which is located close to the city of Ioannina, is best known for the spectacular 7 mile long Vikos Gorge – listed as one of the deepest gorges in the world by the Guinness Book of Records – and the river Voidomatis. Together they form the main part of the Vikos-Aoos National Park that is included in the UNESCO European Geoparks Network and is also part of the Natura 2000 network of nature protection areas located within the EU.
