The exhibition entitled Yiannis Adamakos. 9 Lumen aims to shed light on the course of the artist’s career in painting. Yiannis Adamakos’ painting revolves around three fundamental elements: Space, Figure and Light. From these arise the relationships which define a work in the visual arts, relationships which are repeated and re-evaluated throughout the duration of his thirty years of creative presence.
The expressionist nature, the alternating of light and dark regions, the allusive gradations of colour are some of the features of the one hundred or so works, which are shown in the Benaki Museum retrospective.
The exhibition includes large-scale works, which are shown to the public for the first time, and which constitute the natural continuation of his previous series of works with the general title The Space Between (2007). Also significant are the smaller scale black-and-white works of graphite on paper, in which Adamakos makes full use of all the capabilities of his medium, in order to play, most successfully, an alluring game of light and shadow.
Lumen (lm) is the unit of luminous flux and measures the strength of light that can be perceived by the human eye.
