Wolf Suschitzky. Voyage in Greece in the 60s

The exhibition “Wolf Suschitzky: Voyage in Greece in the 60’s”, which presents photographs by Wolf Suschitzky, is hosted at the Benaki Museum (N. Hadjikyriakos-Ghika Gallery) from April 24, 2015 to June 27, 2015.

Photographer Wolf Suschitzky was in Greece in the ‘60s and has captured through his lens the Greek scenery, and the occupations and traditions surrounding it shortly before it was inevitably altered.

The exhibition comprises 48 original black-and-white photographs, all printed by Suschitzky himself. With the exception of three photographs belonging to the photography archive of the Ghika Gallery, a gift Suschitzky made to N. H. Ghika, the rest of the photographs come from the photographer's personal collection and are exhibited in Greece for the first time.

The photographs of Skiathos predominate in the exhibition. Suschitzky’s acquaintance with painter John Craxton will subsequently take him to Hydra, in N. Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas’ mansion, where he will photograph both artists. The exhibition is completed by sceneries of the Acropolis that Suschitzky reflects in admiration, exploiting the intense light and the interesting shadings it creates.

The short film “Mikhalis”, directed by John Ingram and featuring original music composed by Mikis Theodorakis, will be screened as part of the exhibition.

The exhibition is curated by Ian Collins and Ioanna Moraitis.
