Robert Wilson has at times got involved in choreography, painting, sculpture and performance, and is now focusing on directing without having ever abandoned the visual arts. In this context, the famous artist conceived and directed approximately 60 Video Portraits (some of which in multiple versions) between 2004 and 2009.
Robert Wilson created these Video Portraits using a high resolution image and combining each of the portraits with an original music composition, with the collaboration of songwriters such as Lou Reed, Nino Rota, David Byrne, Tom Waits, Bernard Hermann, Michael Galasso or orchestrating works by Bach, Beethoven, Massenet, Tchaikovsky and Wagner. The videos star famous actors, singers, dancers, visual artists, writers as well as animals. Although his heroes seem to be static, there appears to be an almost imperceptible evolvement process which catches the viewer’s attention and keeps up suspense.
It is the world premiere for three brand new versions of Video Portraits: those of Juliette Binoche, Sean Penn and Horned Frog; the project materialised following the support and funding of the Onassis Cultural Centre.
