Two new art exhibitions at Athens International Airport

Athens International Airport (AIA) continues its long and successful collaboration with the Benaki Museum in Athens by hosting two great art exhibitions that opened their doors to airport passengers and visitors in early summer this year and will be on display until 31 December 2018.

1. Book Illustrations by Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika from the Benaki Museum Collections

The first exhibition, titled “Book Illustrations by Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika from the Benaki Museum Collections” focuses on six illustrated editions that the famous Greek painter, sculptor, engraver, writer and academic – and one of the most acclaimed Greek artists of the 20th century – worked on between the 1930s until the 1990s. In particular, the exhibition showcases several of the artists’ works (sculptures, drawings, prints, etc.) and illustrations inspired by and/or commissioned for prominent poem collections, novels and literary magazines. These include the collection of ancient Greek poems “Lyrica” (1972), the publication “India” (1959), the “Poems” by C. P. Cavafy (1966), the novel “Daphnis and Chloe” by Longus (1970), “Lysistrata” by Aristophanes (1977) and the “Odyssey” by Nikos Kazantzakis (1958).

The exhibition, which runs until 31 December 2018, is hosted at the “Art & Environment” exhibition area located at the Departures Level (near Entrance 3) of Athens International Airport (AIA).

2. “Greek Seas, A photographic journey in time through the Benaki Museum Photographic Archives”

The second exhibition, titled “Greek Seas, A photographic journey in time through the Benaki Museum Photographic Archives” showcases a series of photographs taken from the mid-19th century until the late 1970s capturing Greece’s unique sea landscapes. The exhibition is divided into four different sections based on the chronological order the pictures were taken and aims to provide an insight in the way in which Greek and foreign photographers, who visited or lived in the country for long periods of time, approached and interpreted the Greek seas during the said period.

The exhibition, which runs until 31 December 2018, is hosted at the “Art & Culture” exhibition area located at the Arrivals Level (near Exit 1) of Athens International Airport (AIA).
