This exhibition of still lives, drawn entirely from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, features European and American paintings from the 16th century to the 21st. Familiar, easy to understand, and visually appealing, still life has served as a platform for artists through the ages to express their artistic concerns and test their artistic mettle. Many motifs recur in different media, cultures, and time periods.
The selection of paintings is rich in tabletop arrays of luscious fruit and riotous flowers in various styles. There are vanitas images that allude to the fleeting nature of life and trompe l’oeil works intended to fool the eye with their illusionism.
The exhibition includes some of the Museum of Fine Arts’ masterpieces, works of finest technique, craftsmanship and personal expression, ranging from Edouard Vuillard, Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet, Alfred Sisley, Georges Braque, Jean Metzinger, James Ensor, Giorgio Morandi, Juan Gris, Franz Kline and Sam Taylor-Wood.
