Oenorama 2018 at Zappeio megaron

Oenorama, Greece’s most important wine show and the largest exhibition of Greek wines in the world, is set to open its doors to visitors on Saturday March 10 for three days of non-stop tastings and other wine-related events at Zappeio megaron.

The show, which is open to the general public over the weekend ― the 3rd day, Μοnday, is trade-only ― is in its 24th year and is the annual meeting point for the entire Greek wine industry.

Held at Zappeion Megaron, one of the most prestigious buildings of central Athens, Oenorama 2018 will be featuring more than 350 wineries showcasing thousands of wines. All appellation areas and styles of Greek wines are on show as are Greece’s indigenous grape varietals, including well-known ones such as assyrtiko, xinomavro, agiorgitiko and moschofilero and rising-stars such as malagouzia, vidiano and lemniona. Many imported wines and direct exhibitors from abroad also be present.

Greek wine is currently making an impact in several markets, including those of North America, the UK, Belgium and Germany. In the United States Μaster Sommeliers are listing Greek wines in trendy restaurants, wine publications are doing stories on indigenous Greek varietals and both the Wine Spectator and the Wine Advocate have dedicated tasters for Greek wines. The most telling trend is the fact that non-Greek importers and distribution companies from all over the world are adding Greek references to their listings as Greek wine goes mainstream.

Trade visitors at Oenorama can access the “Discover Greek Wine” tasting gallery featuring 250 of Greece’s best wines, which they can self-pour at a leisurly pace without the presence of the winemakers-exhibitors. Another hall called “Wine Revelations” is an exhibition-within-the exhibition with 35 very small wineries and a wine bar with wines from lesser-known varietals, natural wines, unfiltered wines and wild-yeast wines. Many of these “Top Obscure” wines will be presented to the public for the very first time and are the ideal choice for importers who have already listed well-known producers and are looking for something new to make them stand out from their competition.
For the timid and the confused, the show is offering free guided tours with sommeliers who will explain all about the “Greek Wine Renaissance” while visiting various stands and tasting wines.

During the week following the show (March 12 to 18), Vinetum, the organizers of Oenorama, will launch the 4nd edition of the Athens Wine Week, supported by the Greek Wine Federation and featuring exciting wine-related events all across town.

Do not miss this opportunity to discover for yourself what is new in Greek wines and why it is worth importing them.
