Manon Lescaut is the first opera to clearly reveal Puccini’s remarkable musical language. This passion – filled story of love of the Chevalier Des Grieux and Manon Lescaut is based on the novel by the Abbé Prévost, set to music by many composers. Puccini’s opera stands out for the intensity with which it expresses emotions and the orchestral richness of the music.
The stage direction has been undertaken by one of the world’s most sought-after opera directors, Giancarlo del Monaco, son of famous Italian tenor Mario del Monaco who starred alongside Maria Callas in historic productions at La Scala, Milan in the 1950s.
The sets for this major production have been undertaken by eminent Greek set designer Nikos Petropoulos, who places the action of the opera in a 1960s film studio, where a movie is being made about Manon Lescaut.
Manon Lescaut was last presented by the Greek National Opera in 1986, that is, 26 years ago.
